Five of the firearms used in the deadly farm attack have also been retrieved.

After nearly four months of intensive investigation, the final suspect in the Van Rooyen farm attack in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal has been arrested.

This brings the total number of arrests in the heinous double murder to nine, as the last suspect was arrested and taken into custody last Thursday in Paulpietersburg, Vryheid Herald reported.

Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said it is alleged the family running the shop were accosted by group of about 12 unknown armed suspects.

“The suspects subsequently fired shots and injured three victims. The shop owner, Billy van Rooyen, 37, died on his way to the hospital. The other two victims were admitted at the local hospital where the father-in-law Ronnie Lombard, 62, later succumbed to his injuries,” added Zwane.

A further firearm, believed to have been used in the vicious attack on the Van Rooyen and Lombard homestead in April, was also recovered. In total, five of the firearms used in the farm attack have now been retrieved and police are optimistic that further recoveries will be made.

The recovered weapons have been sent for forensic examination and police are awaiting ballistic results to establish if the weapons can be traced to other criminal activity.

The nine accused will appear collectively at the Vryheid Magistrates’ Court on August 8.

Captain Attie Engelbrecht, the investigating officer, and his team, who have been diligent in their search for these malicious murderers, thanked the community for their assistance in capturing the suspected Van Rooyen killers.
