Pensioner attacked with roof plates in Bela-Bela

Johan Rossouw, a pensioner from Bela-Bela, was attacked on his smallholding in the Buyskop area on Friday, August 12. A suspected thief was trying to carry away sheets of corrugated iron on his own and was caught in the act.

When Rossouw confronted the man, the thief attacked him and beat with iron sheeting before he made a dash to get away. He apparently left the sheet metal and disappeared in the direction of the Bela-Bela Township.

Bela-Bela Crime Support Group (BBCS) and the police were called to the scene and within minutes, a man was arrested.

COL. Abel Phetla, head of detective, said the man arrested, so far is not connected to the crime. The police, however, suspect that more than one person was involved in the incident.

Rossouw had received medical treatment and stitches in his head.

His wife, Leonie, said that if her husband turned his face when the suspect hit him, he could have been hurt badly.

Leonie, who is in a wheelchair, said theft cases are happening almost every week at their place. She is very concerned about the township that appears to be expanding closer to their property.

“We really have a problem with crime. When the intruders enter our property, they are arrogant towards me. This incident will ensure the police are more visible in the area. A tavern recently opened barely 500 meters away is also a problem,” she said.

Leonie said that they are both pensioners and could not afford to find another home.

Elri Arlow, chairman of the BBCS, said that people must ensure protection against crime and not be negligent, as crime is a reality.

Police robbed, shot at by three armed men in Esther Park

The robbers later burned the vehicle they were using in an open veld in Esselen Park

A case of attempted murder and armed robbery is being investigated after three men robbed and shot at police members in Esther Park on Saturday morning.

It is alleged that Sebenza SAPS members were patrolling in the suburb at about 11.40am when they stopped a white Ford Focus with three occupants on Amatungulu Street.

Police noticed the car did not have a licence disc on the windscreen.

“When they enquired about the disc, the driver of the Ford got out and told them the licence was in the boot,” police spokeswoman, Sgt Sharon Tsotsotso, explained.

The driver of the car and one of the police officials went to the back of the car.

“A few moments later the other two occupants jumped out of the car, grabbed the policeman’s firearm and hit him on the head with it.  The armed man then shot at the SAPS member.”

The officers managed to dodge the bullets and escaped from the scene, with one of them suffering only slight injuries to the head from being hit with his gun.

After also stealing the keys from the police vehicle, the armed trio fled the scene in the Ford.

“It was later established the three attempted to hijack a BMW in Norkem Park. Failing, they drove to an open field in Esselen Park.”

They set the Ford on fire and fled on foot. Community members tried to chase after them but the trio managed to evade them.

Back at the scene in Esther Park, two cellphones and driver’s licences were found on the scene.

The injured cop was transported to hospital for treatment.

Woman ambushed after bank visit

The men fired two shots in the air.

A woman was robbed outside her house at the weekend after returning from the bank.

Police spokesperson Captain Bonginkosi Msimango said the woman was ambushed outside her gate in Van der Walt Street, Erasmia, around 13:45 on Saturday.

He said the woman was returning from the bank where she had converted dollars into rands.

“The woman said two men driving a black BMW approached her while she was waiting for her gate to open.”

Msimango said the men fired two shots in the air.

“The woman panicked and reversed into a wall while trying to escape.”

The men fled after taking the woman’s handbag, containing valuables amounting to about R35 000 in cash.

NEWSFLASH: Elderly woman killed at home

“The men broke into the elderly woman’s home and fled in her white Nissan Sentra.”

An elderly woman was killed in her home in the east of Pretoria at the weekend.

A Meyerspark resident, who asked not to be named, said the elderly woman who lives a few houses away from her, was alone when she was attacked by an unknown number of men on Saturday afternoon around 16:00.

“The men broke into the elderly woman’s home and fled in her white Nissan Sentra.”

It is not yet clear why or how the woman was killed.

Police arrived at the woman’s home in Odendaal Street shortly after the attack.

She said it was unclear who contacted them.

“They knocked on the door, but when there was no response they left,” said the resident.

A second unit of police officers arrived a while later. They gained entry into the home and found the woman’s body.

The resident said the police were still at the scene by nightfall.

Police could not be reached at time of publishing, but more information would follow.

Woman robbed of wedding ring worth R450 000

The armed men were driving in a black Audi SUV

A woman was robbed of her wedding ring by three armed men in Bredell on Thursday afternoon.

The ring is worth about R450 000.

Kempton Police spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, said the incident occurred at about 1.39pm at the woman’s home on 2nd Avenue. The men approached the woman while she was outside in her yard.

“The victim was held up at gunpoint by three armed men,” Mtshali confirmed. The thieves were travelling in a black Audi SUV.

No arrests have been made yet and police request anyone with information to contact Det W/O Poley on 011-393-8600 or 08600-10111. Alternatively, send an SMS to the crime line number 32211.
